What Is a Claude Text Watermark?
Claude's text watermark is a statistical pattern Anthropic is adding to text produced by supported Claude models. Anthropic says models launched in the EU on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch, while support for older models is still being rolled out.
Definition
Anthropic says Claude uses a version of Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text approach. The model uses a secret key and the preceding words to change the source of randomness when choosing among equally suitable next words. This creates a statistical pattern without adding text, metadata, or hidden Unicode characters. Anthropic published this technical explanation on August 14, 2026.
Why It Exists
Anthropic says it is implementing machine-readable marking to support content transparency and meet its commitments under the EU AI Act's Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. The marks apply worldwide on supported models rather than identifying a user, organization, or individual chat.
How It Differs From Detectors
A keyed watermark detector checks whether word choices match the pattern associated with Anthropic's secret key. General AI detectors do not have that key and instead classify writing patterns after the fact. Anthropic has announced a detection API, but had not released it as of August 17, 2026. The checker on this site is not a Claude watermark detector.
